Chembai Memorial Government Music College
The Chembai Memorial Government Music College, Palakkad is one of the premier institutions of Carnatic Music in Kerala. The govt .of Kerala started this institution with a vision and mission to provide facility for the highly talented music students of the Malabar region to learn the art of Carnatic Music – Vocal,Veena,Violin, and Mridangam
The college was established in the year 1957.At that time,the administrative control was vested with the Director of Public Instruction . The music academy offered 4 year Ganabhooshanam Diploma course in Vocal , Veena, Violin and Mridangam and three year Ganapraveena Post Diploma course in Vocal.
Eminent exponents and professors in the field of classical music and instrumental music served as faculty members in the premier institution and their devotion and dedication for the cause of music, promotion and propagation of classical music has highly contributed for the success of music education and has produced highly talented performing artists of excellence.
The Director of Collegiate Education took over the administrative control of the music academy in the year 1980 . Sangeetha Vidwan Sri. Madurai Kesava Bhagavatar was the first Principal. Considering the rich musical and cultural contributions of the Great son of Palakkad ,the legenadry musician Sri.Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, the government decided to rename the music academy as Chembai Memorial Government Music College.
In 2001 the premier institution was upgraded and affiliated to the University of Calicut. The existed Diploma and Post Diploma courses were restructured as BA DEGREE IN VOCAL, VEENA, VIOLIN AND MRIDANGAM
The Post graduate course M A in Vocal Music has commenced from the academic year 2011-2012
The college has a multi media library where students are exposed to listen to the audio and view video recordings of great masters and living legends in the field of Indian music .
The college has a well equipped library with abve 7500 books of various subjects including Music,Sanskrit and English literature.The library supported by “Libsoft” can be accessed from anywhere in the world
The college has separate hostel facility for girls and boys
The MD RAMANATHAN AUDITORIUM in the College campus is an added attraction
An air conditioned hall ,“ Sri Palakkad Mani Iyyer Conservatory” is used to conduct concerts ,seminars and events of college. The college has a highly equipped Recording studio and an Air conditioned Smart classroom also.
